To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and /or potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management. self-advocacy and learning.” National Association of School Nurses 1999.

Comprehensive school health services include;

  • Injury and illness assessment and treatment

  • Management of chronic diseases

  • Administration of medication

  • Monitoring compliance with state immunization guidelines

  • Identification and prevention of the spread of disease

  • Vision and hearing screening

  • Postural screening

  • Bmi (body mass index) screening

  • Referral/counseling/guidance

  • Promotion of healthy life-style choices

Sally Quinton, R.N

Sally Quinton, R.N., is the lead nurse for the Athol-Royalston Regional School District and also the school nurse at Athol-Royalston Middle School. She has been a registered nurse for 40 years, beginning her clinical nursing career at Heywood Hospital in Gardner, MA and working as a school nurse in Athol for the past 23 years. She holds a Master of Science Degree in Community Health and has been a Nationally Certified School Nurse since 2002.

Sally’s role as lead nurse oversees school health practice, integrating school nursing strategies to support school nurses, students and their families. As the school nurse at the Athol-Royalston Middle School, her role is to promote student health, bridging health care and education through collaboration and care coordination with students, families, school personnel, healthcare professionals and the community, to help ensure educational success for students.
